About Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh is the capital city of Cambodia and home to just over 2 million people. It is a city full of resilient people, recovering from the Khmer Rouge just over 40 years ago. There are over 100,000 people living in the slums, the focus of our ministry in the city. There is extensive poverty, forcing children to help provide for their families by collecting and selling garbage instead of going to school. Our local leaders work with the children and their families to build literacy skills, help them go to school if possible, provide discipleship opportunities, and help children in unsafe home environments.

Literacy & Education

One of the core ministries in Phnom Penh is our literacy and education program run by Pastor Somnong and his team. There are two things that hinder children who live in Phnom Penh from getting an education. One of these is the finances needed to pay for the school fees, uniforms, and materials. Our sponsorship program helps pay for these needs. The other is a lack of literacy, preventing older children from being able to learn with other kids their age in school. Pastor Somnong and his team provide tutoring at the church for older children who are unable to read and write, helping them gain the literacy skills they need to succeed in life.

Discipleship

The foundation of Construction of Hope is sharing the Gospel with the next generation and training them to be leaders in their faith. Pastor Somnong and his team provide discipleship opportunities on a weekly basis that involve Bible study, participating in Sunday church services, group prayer, and outreach opportunities. These young men and women learn how to be true followers of Christ and how to be leaders in their community.

Slum Ministry

Along an old railroad track, only a few blocks away from the church, is one of the local slum communities. Every day, student leaders in the discipleship program spend 1-2 hours in the slum community, teaching the children who are unable to go to school. They not only share the Good News and worship, but also begin to teach literacy skills. These daily classes help build lasting relationships with the community members in the slum and with members of the church, opening doors for other outreach opportunities.
